Welcome

St Catherine’s College of Education for Home Economics, known to all who studied there
as either ‘St Catherine’s’ or simply as ‘Sion Hill’, closed in September 2007.

In May 2007, the Past Student’s Union held the last reunion in the College It was a memorable
occasion for the very large number of graduates who came from all over Ireland and abroad
to spend an afternoon reminiscing with friends, Past lecturers or just simply to wander
through the building and remember the place where they spent their student days. The DVD
of photographs of Past Students was launched - this wonderful collection of photographs
includes photographs of students every year from the 1930’s onwards. The College is now
closed and the Union must look to the future.   The 2007 graduates were the last graduates
of the College, and last ‘Past Students’. The Union has been your Union – for, without you, the
Union has no purpose, but change brings challenge and it is hoped that the web site will be a
point of contact from now on. We welcome your suggestions for what information should be
included and look forward to hearing from you if you have news that you would like to include.

All the best from Land and Sea by Bernadette Breen

A lifetime of experience is now set in the pages of a new book which will help people to go back to basics when it comes to homecooking.

Retired Home Economics teacher and lecturer Bernadette Breen, put her new book, Food all the best from Land and Sea together for family and friends initially.
The book is available locally from The Spa Seafoods and in Utensils Tralee. The book, which I have written,' Food - all the best from Land and Sea ‘ was launched by Fran McNulty, (R.T.E.) at Aghadoe Heights Hotel Killarney, Co.Kerry, on March 6th 2010. The book is educational in the broadest sense, for everyone who is interested in food and cooking. I have drawn on my many years of teaching experience, in compiling the book. With so much expertise and knowledge at my disposal, I hope no one will be disappointed at the result. My object is to try and take some of the mystique out of those culinary processes, which are in danger of falling into disuse because of the special demands they make on time and skill. One of the facts of life is that nothing comes around as inevitably as meal time. For beginners, this thought can be either a pleasant challenge or the knell of approaching doom. Sometimes it is both. Still, producing food that tastes good, however simple, is a satisfying experience. It is my hope that the book will encourage those who read it to eat and drink with greater enjoyment and discrimination, and help them to realize that an understanding of food and drink is essential to one's health and contentment. I am a graduate of St. Catherine's College of Education for Home Economics and N.U.I. Maynooth. I have had considerable teaching experience with Kerry V.E.C. Tralee, Cork City V.E.C. at College of Commerce, and as Teacher / Lecturer at College of Catering, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin. Copies of the book are available in the Kerry area at 'UTENSILS', Castle St. Tralee and Spa Sea Foods, The Spa, Tralee at 20euro per copy. I live at the Spa, Tralee and Tel no is 0667136611 or 0876450468 .
